Since it opened in July 2015, Délices has been adding a little ‘je ne sais quoi’ to Bedford with its high-quality French breads and cakes.
Délices – pronounced day-lease – is a boulangerie-pâtisserie owned and run by Géraldine Perrier Latour and Diana Woo. The two met at a bread and patisserie training course in Paris, where they lived, and after working at a variety of award-winning establishments they joined forces and set up here (Géraldine had already fallen in love with a Bedford man during a visit to Britain – but that’s another story!).
The shop itself is light, airy and welcoming, with soft music and an unhurried feel – and the outside terrace is perfect for the summer months. Inside, a feature window behind the counter allows you to watch Géraldine and Diana at work as they bake their breads and cakes fresh on the premises each day.
It’s the kind of place you can pop in throughout the day and there’ll always be something delicious on offer. Take the mornings – what could be better than a croissant or pain aux raisins fresh out of the oven with an espresso or thick, rich and creamy hot chocolate – plus a swirl of crème Chantilly if you’re feeling decadent.
At lunchtime, the popular choice is a classic French baguette – hand-baked by Géraldine using additive-free wheat flour and a slow fermentation process to give a better taste, texture and aroma. Try the iconic Le Parisien – it may sound like a humble ham baguette but it’s made with Parisian ham that’s been cooked inside a cloth to preserve its flavour and moistness. C’est très bon!
You can also get a mini-baguette with a selection of fillings such as olives and thyme, goat’s cheese, figs and apricots or French blue cheese. There’s no chance of being bored, especially when you can also order quiche, croque monsieur, savoury croissants, soups and salads.
As good as all that sounds, you just have to come back for one of Diana’s mouth-wateringly delicious cakes. Eyeing up the counter you’ll see a colourful display, which Diana will gladly talk you through (having a chat is very handy for practising your French, too!). You’ll find macarons in all sort of fabulous flavours, confections created with vanilla and white chocolate ganache plus to-die-for cakes combining crème brûlée and dark chocolate mousse. Magnifique! You won’t want to rush such gorgeous gâteaux so sit back and enjoy with a pot of tea or a herbal infusion.
Can’t stop to eat? Don’t worry – Délices do takeaway, including a selection of eat-at-home breads. Variations include brioche, cocoa bread and rye bread with figs, apricots, walnuts and raisins. You can also buy a range of products such as loose leaf teas, coffee beans, pâtés and jams.
Géraldine and Diana also cater for work events and special celebrations and create luxury gâteaux made to order for birthdays, engagements, anniversaries and weddings.
